A SCHOOL cook is aiming to be named the flavour of the nation next week.

Soggy semolina and colourless carrots are definitely off the menu at Wolsingham Primary School, where mother-of-three Lynn Pearson puts paid to people's memories of inedible, old-style school dinners.

Ms Pearson, who works for catering company Scolarest, has reached the national finals of the LACA School Chef of the Year competition, being held in Birmingham on Tuesday. She was pipped to the title by only one point last year and hopes to take the top spot this time with her menu of Weardale lamb with couscous and plum chutney, followed by sticky apple sponge served with fruit coulis.

The same dishes, created in 90 minutes for 80p a portion, have already won Ms Pearson the Scolarest School Cook of the Year title when a panel including celebrity chef Lesley Waters picked her from rivals around the country.

Ms Pearson lives in Wolsingham where she tries out her dishes on her family.
