HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to take precautions against burglars as the dark nights draw in.

The Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership, a venture led by the police and the district council, is offering 100 free shed or garage alarms to the first 100 residents who apply for them.

Community safety officer Rachel Bowles said: "Although statistics show Richmondshire is one of the safest districts in the country, there is always more we can do to combat crime.

"Simple, cost-effective security measures can make all the difference."

Tips include locking windows and doors when people go out, even if they are only going next door or into the garden.

The partnership also recommends that people use light timers to give the impression that someone is at home even when they are out, and draw curtains so that burglars are not sure if anyone is in.

Householders should never leave large amounts of cash around the home, and make sure that doors and windows are fitted with strong locks.

A burglar alarm is recommended, all property should be security marked, and sheds and garages should be secure.

To receive a free garage or shed alarm, Richmondshire residents should send their name and address to Rachel Bowles, Community Safety Officer, Richmondshire District Council, Swale House, Frenchgate, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 4JE.
