AN Iraqi asylum seeker was released on bail yesterday after appearing in court accused in connection with the death of a 79-year-old cyclist.
Kawa Ali Said Abdullah, 20, gave himself up to Cleveland Police officers in Stockton, on Thursday.
He is accused of being the driver of a Vauxhall Cavalier Sri which collided with pensioner Richard Foley, in Norton Road, Stockton.
The incident happened on Sunday, November 3, and Mr Foley was declared dead at the scene.
Mr Abdullah is a Kurd who entered Britain illegally in the back of a lorry two years ago.
The court heard how he was living with eight fellow countrymen in Shaftsbury Street, Stockton.
Mr Abdullah was receiving £89 a week from the National Asylum Support Service, according to his lawyer, Anastasi Tasou.
He is charged with driving without due care and attention.
Mr Abdullah also faces charges of failing to stop, failing to report an accident, having no driving licence and insurance.
The magistrates rejected a prosecution application to remand him to prison.
He was remanded on bail until December 4.
