A bird hide has been opened at a reserve in memory of a keen ornithologist and conservationist.

Paddy Fleming, of Richmond, North Yorkshire, who died aged 59 in January, formed the Ragged Robin Wildlife Group, which visited reserves and carried out conservation.

Family and friends raised money for a new hide at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Washington.

Paddy's Hide overlooks the Wader lake. Visitors will be able to see visitors including the winter teal and curlew and summer arrivals such as common terns.

Mr Felming's widow, Doreen, said: "It was felt that a fitting tribute to the memory of Paddy would be the building of a bird hide. Washington is one of the closest bird reserves to Paddy's home town and he had taken his group to visit it on several occasions.

"The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust were very grateful to receive a donation enabling them to replace the former Heron Hide, which was badly in need of renovation.''

Centre manager Chris Francis said: "The Wader lake is a wonderful habitat for lots of different birds and the new hide further improves our bird watching experience. I am sure that Paddy's family and friends will see it as a fitting memorial.''

Groups who helped raise money included the Ragged Robin group, Swaledale Outdoor Club and folk bands Beggar's Bowl, Dalesfolk, Nebula and the Black Lion Backroom Band.
