BUILDING apprentices are to gain work experience by renovating two vandalised council houses.
Youngsters in Newcastle City Council's Cityworks department will work on two houses in Wilton Avenue, on the St Anthony's Estate, Walker, as part of a regeneration scheme.
The two properties were converted into four flats in the late 1960s but have since proved difficult to let and are standing empty.
Despite security measures, the buildings have been broken into, prompting complaints from neighbours.
Once renovated, the properties will be put up for sale.
Cityworks officials realised the scheme would give its apprentices an opportunity to develop their skills and council procurement officers contacted their regular suppliers and obtained the materials they would need.
John Richardson, assistant general manager for capital and minor works, said: "As soon as community and housing contacted us about this job, it was obvious that it presented our apprentices with the perfect opportunity to further develop their skills and show what they could do.
"It is not often they get the chance to completely renovate a property and, here, they have that chance twice over.
"I know they are relishing the challenge and cannot wait to get to work over the next few weeks. Whoever is lucky enough to buy these properties will find they really do meet every requirement of modern times."
