THE organisers of an art exhibition for amateur and regional artists are delighted with the response.

Nearly 500 paintings and sculptures have been entered for the exhibition at the DLI Museum, in Durham City.

Eye Opener, which opened yesterday exceeded expectations.

A panel of judges for the first Durham Open Art Exhibition selected more than 200 to go on show until Saturday, December 7.

There are three best in show prizes worth up to £850 and visitors will be able to choose their favourite piece from the display for a prize of £100, given by Nissan.

"We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic response to the exhibition and we are delighted to be able to offer artists based in the Northern Arts region this unique opportunity to show their work in County Durham," said Gillian Wall, Durham County Council's arts development manager.

"We obviously have a great number of talented artists in the region and as a result we are able to put on display some very fine work," she said.
