AN EXHIBITION of the everyday is being staged in Sunderland.

Everything Must Go is the work of Durham Cathedral artist in residence Tony Sinden and is on display at Sunderland's Vardy Gallery.

The exhibition looks at how Mr Sinden started his work for Durham Cathedral and gives an insight into how he planned to use the Sunderland gallery.

The work, which uses projected video images and sound, was inspired by the artist's first visit to the region.

He said: "I was standing at Sunderland bus station, when I noticed a sign reading 'discontinued lines - everything must go'.

"I began to think about how familiar things, and things we do every day, are transformed by their location and re-location. How would an audience react to an everyday object in an art gallery?"

His work, produced during his year-long residency at the cathedral, includes stacks of bottled water, alongside which he has placed a video image of his face. There is also a projected image of Mr Sinden painting the ceiling of the gallery and a projection showing him working in the Vardy Gallery's space before he set up his exhibition.

The exhibition runs until December 13.
