North Durham MP Kevan Jones has called for a ban on happy hours in pubs and clubs. He told the Commons that it led to "binge drinking".
He made the call as MPs debated proposals to relax the licensing laws to allow licenced premises to be open 24 hours a day.
"People are forced to drink large amounts of alcohol at a cheap price for a certain period of time.
"I think that does lead to problems. Some recognition to either ban that or control that will be welcome."
The reform of the licensing laws was "long overdue", he said.
