A BUDDYING scheme at a primary school near Darlington means children will never feel alone at playtimes.

Nine pupils at Bishopton and Redmarshall School have been selected to patrol the playground and encourage youngsters to play together.

All the "buddies" had to apply for their jobs and were interviewed about their strengths and why they wanted to be a part of the scheme.

The pupils wear prominent name badges and hats so they stand out in the playground.

Darlington company Cummins has pledged support to the scheme and staff have offered £2,000 worth of their time to work with the buddies over the coming weeks.

The buddies are: Alice Sharp, Katie Rickerby, Alys Hutchinson, Emily Hook, Bethany Renwick, Sarah Parsons, Lucy Harrison, Sophie Gardner, and Erin Harper.

The school received a grant for £250 from the Government's Work Related Curriculum Fund which it matched with school funds.
