A HOMELESS girl was raped by a man whom she begged for help, a court was told.

The 16-year-old telephoned Barry Mays from a homeless hostel saying she had no one to turn to, said Christine Egerton, prosecuting.

She claimed Mays took her back to his home where he gave her food and a bath, and told her that she could use his bed. But an hour later Mays got into bed with her against her will and raped her.

Ten years later, the girl went to the police, Teesside Crown Court was told, and Mays, 54, was arrested.

He denied the incident, claiming she was making it up, that her mother was obsessed with child abuse and that he had never touched her inappropriately.

Mr Mays, of Redcar Road, Guisborough, east Cleveland, denies rape, and three indecent assaults alleged to have been committed earlier.

The case continues.
