TRADING standards officers have issued a warning to Christmas shoppers to beware of potentially dangerous toys.

In previous years, the Darlington trading standards department has received numerous complaints about counterfeit items, toys with pieces that break off and could cause children to choke, and soft toys made from highly flammable material.

This year, trading standards officials have issued advice to people on how to avoid endangering children by knowing what to look for when purchasing toys as presents.

They say if the advice is not followed, it could leave people with little hope of compensation in the event of injury to a youngster.

Officers say toys should only be bought from reputable shops, to ensure they meet British standards.

To avoid putting children in danger, officers are advising shoppers to:

l Look for toys carrying the European CE mark or the British Toy and Hobby Association's Lion Mark, which show they conform to essential safety requirements.

l Always ask for advice in the shop if uncertain.

l Avoid street traders and sales outlets where the origin of the toys cannot be guaranteed.

l Check stuffed toys for sturdy, well-sown seams, and be certain that noses, eyes or hair cannot be bitten or pulled off.

l Look out for the term "under supervision" on the toys. While these conform to the safety standard, without an adult being present children could misuse the toy and put themselves in danger.

Age and safety guidelines on packaging should be followed, and people should ensure that the toy is appropriate for the child's age group.

Stephen Harker, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for community protection, said: "Unfortunately, there are dangerous toys and fake copies of popular toys on the market.

"We are asking people to be careful where they buy their toys and to check the toys before parting with any money."
