PUPILS at one of County Durham's smallest primary schools are sending goodwill gifts to homeless Russian youngsters.
Fifty shoeboxes filled with presents by families in Witton-le-Wear will arrived in Russia in time to brighten up Christmas for children living on the streets.
The parcels contain toys, toiletries, pens, notebooks, hats, scarves and gloves as well as a card or photograph.
They are being sent through the Samaritan's Purse charity, which runs Operation Christmas Child. This is the fourth year the school has taken part.
Headteacher Michael Clough said: "The children were moved by a visit from Sandra Reynolds, from the charity, who described the conditions in which children were living in the former Yugoslavia and their delight at receiving their gifts."
Last week the school which has 83 pupils, raised £135 for BBC Television's Children in Need appeal. They held a non-uniform day and laid a trail of silver coins around the hall.
