TWO women are leading the way in a health initiative promoting the benefits of exercise as part of the Chance To Live Campaign.
Marianne Waugh and Ada Mitrovic, of High Etherley, near Bishop Auckland, are starting Wear Walking For Health's first village walking group.
The district council scheme, launched at Auckland Castle, in October, runs fortnightly walks in the Wear Valley from The Four Clocks Project, in Bishop Auckland.
They alternate with the Auckland Amblers' walking programme.
To prepare for running the group, Marianne and Ada attended courses in first aid and risk assessment.
Their first walk will be a mile around the village next Wednesday, starting from the Dog and Gun pub. The walk will be followed by hot soup and a bun.
Marianne said: "Ada and I were already enjoying walks in the area so wanted to join this scheme to promote the health benefits and give something for people to do in this area."
Ada said: "There are some lovely places to see around here, so it will be nice if a few people come along to walks and see them for themselves."
Project co-ordinator Lynn Wilson said a group in Etherley is what the scheme needed to reach people in smaller communities.
She said: "The enthusiasm Marianne and Ada have getting people in their village taking part is great. There are so many health benefits to walking."
