The Bishop of Middlesbrough, the Right Reverend John Crowley, will tomorrow lead a Mass in memory of a priest who started his career in South Bank.
Father James (Seamus) Brennan, from Newry, County Down, died peacefully in his sleep on November 6, aged 76.
He began his ministry as an assistant priest in St Peter's, South Bank, in 1952, staying there two years before moving to different churches in the north of England.
"Father Seamus will always be remembered by those who knew him for his gentleness and unassuming manner," said a spokesman for the bishop.
"His dedication and loyalty, both to his parishioners and his diocese, could never be questioned."
"He was particularly filled with great joy at seeing the new church at Sleights completed in time."
Father Seamus retired in 1999 and returned to Ireland after serving at English Martyrs, Sleights, for 17 years.
Bishop Crowley will join other priests in saying Mass in thanksgiving for Father Seamus' ministry at the church tomorrow at 5pm
