A POPULAR living landmark which records part of the region's mining heritage is to be given a winter trim this weekend.
Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity, is appealing for volunteers to help cut back the Jolly Drover's Maze, on the site of Eden Pit Colliery, near Leadgate Consett, on Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.
The large maze, designed by artist Andy Goldsworthy, mimicks the labyrinth of underground tunnels found in the Durham Coalfield.
It is popular with cyclists using the coast-to-coast routes, which run from the east coast to Cumbria.
Sustrans area manager David Gray said: "The maze is a well-known local landmark, even to people flying home to Tyneside, but we have to balance the artist's wishes for it to grow naturally with the public's expectation of it to be kept neat and tidy."
Anyone wanting to help is asked to call (01207) 281259.
