AFTER 51 years of marriage, Molly and David Squires know a thing or two about life - but a recent development has still surprised them.
Much to their surprise, the couple have just taken the regional title of the national Grandparents of the Year competition. Molly, 76, and David, 77, live in Richmond and were nominated for the title by their 19-year-old granddaughter Helen.
Helen was inspired by the close and special relationship her grandparents enjoy.
She said: "Their teamwork and their way of dealing with disagreements have inspired me and helped me feel more mature about my own love life. I have learned so much from them," she said.
"The first we hear about the competition was when Age Concern in London called us a fortnight ago," said Mrs Squires.
"For Helen to have done this is something to be treasured."
Mrs Squires, a silver expert, and Mr Squires, a retired headteacher, will travel to London next month to compete against nine other regional finalists.
