A RARE species of Lady's Mantle, found only in Teesdale, has been given a helping hand to flourish.
The rare flower grows in three grass verges along the B6282 Eggleston to Middleton in Teesdale road, and a rescue mission was undertaken by ten volunteers from GlaxoSmithKline in Barnard Castle.
They were one of several local company teams to accept an environmental challenge in their area during North-East Business Biodiversity Week. Each challenge had to deliver improvements for threatened wildlife and be completed within 24 hours.
Russell Collins, environment, health and safety officer at GSK, told the D&S Times they were happy to help. On Wednesday the team cut back half a mile of rough grass from the verges to enable the flower to get a proper hold next year.
"These three verges are remnants of ancient hay meadows," Mr Collins explained.
