YOUNGSTERS were given an insight into pop music when their school hosted a national tour this week.
The tour, organised by instrument maker Yamaha and the BBC, called at Dene Community College, Peterlee, in a bid to encourage pupils to make their own music.
Two of the country's celebrated keyboard exponents - James Sergeant and Claire Inskip - showed students how to write songs using the latest music technology.
They also learned how to write music for commercials and television.
Head of music Stuart Ramsey said: "We were delighted to be part of this exciting venture - music is an important factor in the lives of young people and we think this innovative experience will help encourage more students to have a go at playing instead of just listening."
The tour coincides with the launch of a school pack with a 60-minute video aimed at helping young people play keyboards.
It features an eclectic range of musicians talking about their subject
