A WELL-known Scarborough sportsman has been killed in a motorcycle accident in Cornwall.
David Witty, 28, was a bowler with Staxton Cricket Club and hockey player with Scarborough 1st XI.
The annual meeting of the club was postponed at the weekend as a mark of respect for Mr Witty, an engineer, who had won several sporting awards in Scarborough before moving south. His family said he had been in collision with a van in Newquay, where he lived.
JEWELLERY THEFT: Police want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area of Kestrel Drive, Scotton, near Catterick Garrison on the evening of Tuesday, November 19. Thieves broke into a house and stole a large amount of jewellery of sentimental value, including a gold necklace with topaz stones and a matching bracelet. A DVD player and video camera were also taken. Anyone with information is asked to call police on (01609) 789355.
CHRISTMAS CASTLE: Shoppers will be able to join in with the Christmas spirit at Pickering Castle on Friday, December 6. The gift shop will be open after 5pm and a carol service will be held in the medieval chapel at 7pm. Admission is free.
MUSIC SPECTACULAR: Born To Run, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band, will be performing at Elders Bar, Northallerton, on Thursday, December 5. On Thursday, December 19, the Bryan Adams Experience tribute band will be performing. Both shows start at 8.30pm.
ROAD CLOSURE: Motorists in Northallerton are being warned about the temporary closure of the C2 road, where it crosses Welbury level-crossing, due to maintenance work. The road will be closed from 7pm on Sunday until 5am the following morning. Diversions will be in place.
CRAFT FAIR: The Mayor's charity craft fair will take place in Northallerton Town Hall on Friday, December 6, from 5pm to 9pm. The fair will be open between 5pm and 9pm. Tables are available for £10. To reserve one, call (01609) 776718.
CULTURAL IDEAS: Scarborough Borough Council is urging residents to have their say about cultural activities which take place in the area. A questionnaire is being sent to organisations to establish what activities and support people want.
STORE APPROVAL: Plans to build a supermarket in Stockton have been approved. It is possible that the 12,500 sq ft unit on the site currently occupied by the Ahed distribution warehouse, on the corner of Maritime Road and Bath Lane, will be a discount store.
MONITOR AWARD: North-East youngsters are waiting to discover if they have been nominated as Milk Monitor of the Term in a competition run by Cool Milk at School, which supplies milk to schools nationally.
