North Yorkshire's new Chief Constable, Della Canning, has been invited to attend the meeting of the Ryedale branch of the Yorkshire Local Councils Association on February 4.
The move follows concerns by leaders of Ryedale's five town councils - Malton, Norton, Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering - that police visits to their meetings have declined, and police have failed to report back on incidents say councillors.
In addition, the town group felt there was a lack of confidence in the police service by the public in Ryedale.
The group said there was a need to build up neighbourhood watch schemes.
Councillors were told that a review was being carried out on the policing of the whole Ryedale district.
Inspector Neil Burnett had told the group that officers in Ryedale deal with about 25 crimes per head of population while in Scarborough the figure was 95. But the distances covered by officers in Ryedale to attend incidents was considerably more, he added.
