THREE community wardens are pounding the beat to help police tackle crime and disorder.
Gateshead Council has recruited them to work with police and residents in Birtley.
Their duties include reporting on fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles, lighting and checking on empty properties.
They will also work with residents' associations, businesses and other community groups.
The project was funded through an £89,000 grant from the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
