SOME of the great railways of Europe past and present will be brought to life at an exhibition next month.
Darlington Model Railway Club is holding its annual exhibition at the college of technology, in Cleveland Avenue, on Saturday and Sunday, November 30 and December 1, from 10am to 5pm.
Co-organiser Phil Ashlee, from Heighington, near Darlington, said: "We expect that one of the stars of the exhibition will be a layout set somewhere in France during the First World War, when trains played a vital role transporting troops and supplies to the frontline.
"One of the biggest displays is Jayzack, a fictitious mid-European narrow-gauge country station, served by digitally-controlled locomotives and stock from Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The display is 20ft by 6ft and has very impressive sound effects."
Others exhibits which will be on view among the 12 principal displays include children's favourite Thomas the Tank Engine, a line serving a sandstone quarry high in a Pennine valley, and the host club's entry, called Darlington Parkgate.
