DOG owners are being given the chance to protect their pets by having them microchipped.
Sunderland City Council and the National Canine Defence League are offering the microchipping service at several locations across the city.
The service aims to make it easier for owners to be reunited with their dogs should they lose their pets. When a microchipped dog is found a scan of the chip reveals a registration number matching the owner's name and address on a national database.
The service is free for pensioners and people on low incomes. Others can have their dog microchipped for £9.50.
Microchipping will take place at Washington Arts Centre, from 9am to 4pm today; Redby Community Centre in Fulwell, from 9am to 4pm tomorrow; St Nicholas Church Hall in Hetton, from 9am to 4pm on Thursday; and Newbottle and District Community Association, from 9am to 4pm on Friday.
All dogs must have been vaccinated and puppies under 12 weeks old will only be microchipped if vaccination certificates are provided.
