A WINE merchant who narrowly escaped death after a skiing accident has raised the biggest ever sum of money for brain injury charity Headway.
Simon Wrightson, from Manfield, near Darlington, raised more than £26,000 for the charity by taking part in this year's Great North Run.
The 48-year-old, who suffered a brain haemorrhage after an accident in France nine years ago, will be thanked for his efforts at an awards ceremony at the Savoy Hotel, in London, next month.
A spokesman for Headway said: "Mr Wrightson raised the largest ever sponsorship money for us and we are highly delighted and very grateful."
The cash will be used to set up a helpline for people who have suffered traumatic head injuries.
