A LOCAL authority's information technology unit has been nominated for a Government accolade.
Work carried out by Derwentside District Council, in County Durham, on social inclusion through information and communications technology has earned the unit a shortlisting for Beacon Status.
The Government awards Beacon Status to councils for services which are good.
Councillor Jean Huntley said the unit's development is important in aiding the recovery of the district.
She said: "It enables our residents and the business community to take advantage of opportunities offered by information and communications technology."
Among initiatives, the council has increased access to the Internet for people without computers.
