A DEDICATED engineer has been honoured after achieving academic excellence.
Paul Ashton, from Brotton, east Cleveland, left school at 16 but went on to earn a first-class honours degree in electrical engineering after studying part-time after work.
Now he has been presented with a medal by Higher Education Minister Michael Foster MP, after being named a Whitworth Scholar.
Mr Ashton was one of 11 graduates to receive the honour.
All the graduates left school after GCSEs and worked in industry while studying part-time.
Mr Ashton eventually studied full-time in Manchester and received his degree.
He was granted the scholarship, worth £3,000, as an undergraduate. Prior to university, Mr Ashton was employed by Teesside Training Enterprise, where he obtained a Btec Higher National Certificate in Engineering.
