NEWCASTLE United and England legend Peter Beardsley yesterday opened the city's new £5.5m cinema.
The Odeon opened in a blaze of black and white, with specially created Toon Army popcorn in the Magpies' colours and the screening of the Newcastle Utd v Inter Milan game.
For non-Newcastle United supporters the first UK screening of the latest Jackie Chan film, Tuxedo was screened.
The new cinema is situated near St James's Park stadium at The Gate, Newgate Street and replaces the Odeon on Pilgrim Street, which closed on Tuesday after 70 years of film showing.
The modern 12-screen version was opened yesterday by Mr Beardsley, who 20 years ago was voted most promising sporting newcomer by cinema-goers at the old cinema.
The cinema officially opens its doors to the public today when the specially commissioned black and white popcorn will still be on sale, served in limited edition Newcastle United popcorn cartons.
