THE streets will resound with carol singing at the launch of a Christmas festival today.
Durham's Christmas Festival 2002, which runs until Sunday, will be launched with carols around the Christmas tree in the Market Place.
The mayor, Councillor Eileen Rochford, will lead a procession from the Town Hall at 5pm, with singing led by Framwellgate School's brass band and choir, St Godric's Primary School choir and Durham University's rock gospel choir.
Tomorrow, a Eurocrafts exhibition, including a Belgian chocolate-maker, will be held in the Town Hall; along with Christmas markets in the Market Place and on Framwellgate Bridge.
On Saturday, there is music, and a Christmas gifts and crafts marquee, horse and carriage rides, and a period bicycle display in Palace Green.
On Saturday and Sunday, there will be advent processions with carols at Durham Cathedral, at 7pm.
Festival programmes are available from the Tourist Information Centre, in Millennium Place, on 0191-384 3720.
