GARAGES in Newton Aycliffe are to be turned into warehouses to store furniture donated to help some of Sedgefield borough's most vulnerable residents.
Sedgefield Borough Council has donated three garages to the St Vincent de Paul Society, St Mary's and St Joseph's Furniture Help Scheme.
In addition, a National Lottery grant has been awarded to install new doors and security systems to help make the garages secure.
An award of £1,215 has been received from the National Lottery Grants for Local Groups Awards for All scheme.
The venture is also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Arts Council of England, Community Fund, New Opportunities Fund and Sport England.
Councillor Vince Crosby, who represents the Middridge ward, is also a helper and supporter of the St Vincent De Paul Society.
He said: "This is an established borough-wide scheme and we will do everything we can to assist anyone who is in need."
Anyone wishing to donate furniture can contact Chris Palmer, on (07814) 256019, or Coun Crosby, on (01325) 315083.
