YOUNGSTERS in Teesdale will be given a lesson in sign language as part of an event to make children more aware of deafness.
On December 5, under fives from Romaldkirk Playgroup will be visited by members of the Dales Group for the Hearing Impaired for a Christmas celebration.
Hilary Lane, the co-ordinator for the Hearing Impaired in Teesdale, will be joined by a member from Co.deaf.
To raise deaf awareness at the playgroup she will tell the children a story supported by sign language, to help them understand how people who have hearing difficulties can communicate.
The visitors will be entertained by the children singing songs with actions. They will also be given the opportunity to see Christmas decorations made at the playgroup and try out home-made mince pies and cakes.
Ms Lane said: "The members of the Hearing Impaired Group are really looking forward to meeting the children."
Romaldkirk Playgroup runs every Thursday afternoon during term time, from 12.45pm to 2.45pm at The Old School Room, in Romaldkirk.
It offers supervised play for pre-school children from the age of two-and-a-half.
There is also a toddler room, where carers can chat and have a cup of coffee.
Equipment has been purchased with money gained from grant applications, and the playgroup provides a stimulating experience for the youngsters. Some spaces are still available for this year.
