PUPILS at a school which is to become an eco-centre got the ball rolling by planting trees within the grounds.
Children at Esh Winning Primary School, near Durham, spent Thursday planting trees in a joint project with environmental group Groundwork for National Tree Planting Week.
Next year, the school will become a designated eco-centre, pioneering environmental initiatives.
Headteacher Patricia Bately said the children also learnt about trees and discovered that the nation's tree population has halved since 1982.
The children also named each tree they planted.
Mrs Bately said: "We try and personalise the trees so the children really look after them and protect them so they can see it has a life and needs to be cared for and nurtured. If we can teach our children from the age of three to care for their surroundings and they feel ownership of the environment, we can eradicate vandalism.
