STRIKING firefighters left their picket lines to help rescue a teenager trapped in a car in a serious accident.
A police spokesman said two 16-year-old girls were badly hurt when a Vauxhall Vectra, in which they were passengers, was involved in a collision on the B1318 Great North Road, in Gosforth, Newcastle, at 10pm on Friday.
A police spokesman said a Rover Metro travelling south was turning left into the Three Mile Inn car park when the Vauxhall, travelling in the same direction, appeared to collide with the back of it.
The Vauxhall then crossed through the central barrier and collided with a Subaru travelling north, before ending up on its roof on the northbound carriageway.
The Vauxhall driver, a 17-year-old local man, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Metro, a 62-year-old man, was unhurt, while the 43-year-old woman driver of the Subaru suffered minor cuts.
A police spokesman said firefighters broke picket lines to release one of the seriously injured girls, who was trapped in the Vauxhall.
The northbound carriageway was closed four hours, while the southbound carriageway was closed for more than two hours.
