A WOMAN chaplain has been appointed at a school for the first time in its 600-year history.
Anna de Lange joined Durham School as reader and part-time lay chaplain in October.
She was installed in the post of chaplain by the Bishop of Durham, the Right Reverend Michael Turnbull, on Friday.
Mrs de Lange's appointment follows that of Canon Gilly Myers, who was recently installed as chaplain to the Choristers School.
Friday's ceremony took place in Durham School's chapel, which dates back to the 1920s, when it was built as a memorial to former pupils killed in action during the First World War.
Guests included the school's headmaster, Neil Kern, some of the school governors, and all 358 pupils.
Mrs de Lange said: "This is an exciting development for both me personally and for the school.
"I see my main challenge as being to communicate the excitement of the Christian faith to young people.
"I am looking forward immensely to my time at Durham School and have already thoroughly enjoyed my first few weeks."
