POLICE have launched a murder investigation after a man was found dead in a backyard.
Detectives were called to the house in Maple Terrace, Shiney Row, near Washington, Wearside, where they found the body of David Brent Lilley, 36.
Police believe that Mr Lilley, who lived in the Shiney Row area, may have been involved in an altercation with somebody.
A post-mortem examination conducted by a Home Office pathologist established that he died from head injuries.
An ambulance was called to Maple Terrace at about 10.30pm on Sunday after a claim that a man had been assaulted. Neighbours described hearing a commotion at the house.
An incident room was set up at Washington police station and house-to-house inquiries were being conducted in the area last night.
A police spokesman said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have information about what led to the discovery of the body, or from anyone who may have seen anything."
Two men from the area have been arrested on suspicion of murder and were last night helping police with their inquiries.
Anyone who can help has been asked to contact the police on 0191-454 7555, ext 66408.
