Tyneside's bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008 has taken a step forward with the announcement that a music and arts centre is to host another international event.

At a House of Commons reception it was revealed that the International Society for Performing Arts will hold its annual international congress at the Sage music and arts centre in Gateshead in 2005.

Supporters including actor Robson Green and former Sunderland manager Lawrie McMenemy added their backing to Newcastle and Gateshead's joint bid for the title.

Newcastle-Gateshead is one of six UK cities short-listed.

Dari Taylor, MP for South Stockton said: ''The whole issue about culture doesn't mean it's got to be just about Newcastle or Gateshead.

''This is big money, this a seriously big venture. It won't be a trickle down, we'll see the whole region benefiting.''

John McWilliam, MP for Blaydon, said: ''If you described any area of Europe as having a real renaissance - and if any area deserved it - it's Newcastle-Gateshead.''

The Sage is also on another shortlist - against Paris and Seville - to host the leading international world music festival, Womex in 2005.
