THE £1m expansion of Northallerton College has been celebrated in a mathematically-appropriate style.
The new classroom block is dedicated mainly to maths teaching, so the cake cut to mark its opening symbolised one of the best known mathematical formulas.
A pork pie, surmounted by an r for radius, was set inside a square sponge to produce pie-r-squared.
But while the recipe may have been a nutritionist's nightmare, there were still smiles all round when Tyne-Tees TV personality Andy Kluz sliced it up.
The expansion scheme includes eight classrooms, the refurbishment of a science lab and information technology suite, as well as a rebuilt resource centre, reception area, and staff and administration accommodation.
The work, which took 15 months to carry out, was jointly funded by the college and the county council.
