The most recent NYSD Cross Country event was held at Thirsk, where the ground was mostly reasonable underfooot and the day was fair.
Angela Hayward was the first Thirsk and Sowerby lady to finish, in 24.02 minutes followed by Jill Soper 24th in 24.56, Pat Kirby 36th in 26.29, Maureen Gibbs 43rd in 27.06, Nicola Thorpe 46th in 27.29 and Cath Lumb 57th in 29.07. There were 68 finishers and the team were placed fifth.
In the men's race guest runner Martin Scaife finished 1st in 28.02, Rob Burn 25th in 31.53, Walter Busuttil 29th in 32.10, Merv Burn 38th in 32.32, John Yates 51st in 34.13, Stephan Tomaszewski 105th in 37.46, Richard Soper 115th in 38.28, Ernie Huck 118th in 38.54, Dave Jestin 124th in 39.34, Nigel Morgan 131st in 40.59 and Steve Harrison 146th in 43.08. There were 157 finishers in all and the Harriers' men's team were in an excellent first place in Division Two at the end.
Oliver Harrison and Neil Mechie competed in the Under-17 Boys Race and Oliver finished 11th in 25.50, Neil 17th in 28.11.
The previous week 666 runners completed the two-lap Roundhay Park five mile and John Yates finished in 47th place in a time of 29.50 minutes. Alan Harman was 178th in 34.54 and Nicola Thorpe 362nd in 40.32.
