A RETIRED prison officer was back behind bars yesterday to receive recognition of his long service.
Jimmy Johnston, who lives in Barnard Castle, County Durham, with his wife, Ray, was presented with the Imperial Service Medal.
He joined the service in 1971, moving to Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution, Barnard Castle, in 1977, as a senior officer. Following a move to Low Newton prison, Durham, in 1985, he attained temporary governor grade, before returning to Deerbolt in 1990.
In presenting him with his awards, area manager for the northern region, Mitch Egan, said, "It is such a joy to make a presentation to someone who's worked so hard for the Prison Service."
Acting governor John Fawcett said he had had the privilege of working with Mr Johnston for considerable periods of time.
"He was easily as effective at governor grade as he was a prison officer, and more than capable of filling that role.
"I feel that has to be said," he added. He also praised his work as head of activities.
Three other members of staff - Colin Proud, Dennis Tallentire and David Wright - also received their 25-year service badges from Mrs Egan, who went on to speak about the commendations she was awarding to Malcolm McAdam and Paul Walker for their actions after a road accident in October.
