A PUB'S plan to build a detached property in its gardens overlooking a village green have been turned down.
June Hawes, of The Sawley Arms, Sawley, near Ripon, applied to the area planning committee of Harrogate Borough Council for outline permission for the scheme.
Seven councillors voted against it, two were in favour and there was one abstention.
Planning officer Jane Lurcuck recommended refusal, saying the scheme did not amount to an in-filling or a rounding-off development.
She also felt it would have a detrimental impact on Sawley's character and appearance and on the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
She said because the public house would be close to the property, it would have a detrimental impact on the residential amenity of those living in the new development.
At the same meeting, permission was granted for Ripon's Spa Gardens bowling pavilion to be extended.
Members of the planning committee of Harrogate Borough Council voted 6-1 to approve the application.
The scheme won backing despite an objection from the council's own conservation and design section.
