From this newspaper 20 years ago. - The Durham County teachers' dispute seemed no nearer a solution this week, as the Education Committee went ahead with recruiting school meals supervisory assistants and the teachers spread their no-cover for absent colleagues action to 44 out of 50 schools. The teachers' dispute began last month when the NAS/UWT and NUT withdrew their cover for absent colleagues after the education authority decided not to employ casual teachers for this duty. The council then docked the pay of the teachers involved and they in turn refused to continue voluntary supervisory duties.
