AN employers' guide to recruiting and retaining disabled staff was launched this week.

Employers from across the region were invited to Durham County Cricket Club in Chester-le-Street for the North-East launch of The Knowledge.

The guide is a best practice kit for employing disabled people, and its launch was arranged by JobCentre Plus North-East to coincide with European Day of the Disabled on Tuesday.

Among the speakers at the event were JobCentre Plus North-East's deputy regional director, Diane Hedley; Paul Newman, of the Employer's Forum on Disability and Granada television presenter Eammon O'Neall.

The day included the awarding of 'two ticks' symbols to companies which have demonstrated their commitment to the disabled. Recipients included Durham County Cricket Club itself. Ms Hedley said: "There are something like 8.7m people in the adult population who have disabilities, and the key thing is for employers to realise the potential of this client group. The Knowledge is a new addition to the support available."
