Malton & Norton: The Under-11s enjoyed a superb day at Selby, first trouncing a strong Selby team five tries to nil, and following up with an impressive win against visiting Wetherby.
The strength in depth of the Under-11 squad was the most pleasing outcome of the two games, as 17 boys turned up on the day.
Malton dominated the Selby team from the outset and in cold and wet conditions, only Malton were up for the fight. Both in open play, and dominating in the scrum Malton scored through wide open running and also tight driving and mauling. Josh Evans collected a high, swirling kick-off and ran through the Selby defence to score a super try. A full team move, beginning from defence and progressing through the half backs saw Will Prest score.
Sam Stephenson was at the heart of many moves, and his committed drives were rewarded with a try. Further scores by Evans and Gareth Hunt, as Selby dissolved in to indiscipline, rounded off a comprehensive 33-0 victory. Tom Francis capped a dominating display of scrummaging and driving against Selby with a hat-trick of tries against a Wetherby team who beat Malton in this fixture last year.
Again the whole squad performed out of their skins to overcome a physically bigger Wetherby team who were no pushovers. Malton substitutions to reward the loyalty and commitment of the whole squad did not diminish the quality of play.
Tremendous ball-winning, ball-retention and, where possible, expansive play were justly rewarded with a hugely impressive 21-7 win. Well done to all who turned up on the day.
