Police have made a fresh appeal for witnesses to a fatal hit-and-run accident at the junction of Westcott Road and Egerton Road, South Shields, South Tyneside, at 9 40am on Monday.

Nellie Hynes, 77, of Crofton Street, South Shields, was struck by an unknown vehicle. She was taken to hospital, where she died later that day. Police believe the area would have been quite busy at the time, with pedestrians, motorists and delivery drivers. Anyone with information is asked to call 0191-454 7555.

VANDAL ATTACK: Police are appealing for information after three bus shelters were damaged by youths seen loitering in Front Street, Concord, Washington, Wearside, on Tuesday. A police spokesman said there were a number of people in the area at about 10.30pm when two youths were seen smashing the shelters. Anyone with information is asked to call 0191-454 7555.

METROCENTRE CAROLS: Shoppers and staff at the MetroCentre, Gateshead, will be able to take a break from shopping and celebrate Christmas with a traditional carol service on Sunday. The event will take place at 3pm in Exhibition Square, outside Woolworths, and music will be provided by a band from St Elizabeth's Church, Newton Aycliffe.

BRIDGE OPENINGS: The Gateshead Millennium Bridge will be tilting to allow the pleasure boat The Pride of Tyne to pass through at 10pm and 10.10pm tomorrow; 9pm and 9.10pm on Saturday; 3pm and 3.15pm on Sunday; 10pm and 10.10pm next Friday, and 9pm and 9.10pm on Saturday, December 14.
