A charity concert at Durham Cathedral tonight will see the world premiere of a piece written by part-time North-East composer Thomas Webber.

Thomas, a fourth year physics student at Durham University, only started composing recently and tonight's performance of his fanfare - called Pride's Reveille - will be played alongside famous works by great composers, such as Bach and Handel.

His fanfare, played by four trumpeters from Hatfield Brass, will introduce the second half of the concert, which is in aid of three cancer charities.

Sue MacGregor, formerly of Radio Four's Today Programme, will present some of her favourite Christmas readings at the event.

Ms MacGregor will be joined by TV broadcaster Martyn Lewis, and music will also be provided by Durham University Choral Society, Durham Cathedral Choristers and Durham Constabulary Male Voice Choir.

Proceeds from An Evening of Music and Readings in Durham Cathedral will help Marie Curie Cancer Care, St Cuthbert's Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Relief's County Durham appeal.

The event starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12 and £8 (limited view) and are available at the door.
