A PEDESTRIAN died and two people were injured in an accident on a busy North-East trunk road yesterday.
A police spokesman said the dead man, who has not been named, was crossing the southbound carriageway of the A19, just north of the Seaton roundabout, north of Newcastle, when he was struck by a goods vehicle, at 2.35pm. An Astra van collided with the back of lorry when it braked.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, while two people from the Astra were taken by air ambulance to the Sunderland Royal Hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life- threatening.
The southbound carriageway of the A19 was closed for a number of hours while the scene was cleared.
