A VILLAGE centre labelled a white elephant may be closed in January and put up for sale.
The controversial community centre at Middleton St George faces losing its £4,500 Darlington council grant in April and has been struggling to find alternative funding.
A trust owns the land and the building fronting the village water park.
Coun Doris Jones told Wednesday's meeting of the parish plan steering group that three new trustees had been appointed.
A representative had told St Lawrence's Church parochial church council that the centre would close in the new year.
"It was said that it would be sold for development and would possibly fetch about £100,000," she said
Only the previous week, a public parish plan meeting agreed the plight of the community centre should be a priority in issues to be raised with the borough council.
In September, a petition to Low Dinsdale Parish Council protested at a suggestion that residents should help raise £1,000 on their council tax to keep it open.
Steering group member Clive Owen said he understood the centre could only be sold to another charitable trust with similar community aims.
Mike Latter, chairman of the centre management team, was unavailable for comment yesterday.
