A SCHEME to teach people lifesaving techniques has been launched.

Heartstart Chester-le-Street is running a project in North Durham to teach people the skills to save a life in an emergency, such as a person suffering a heart attack or choking.

It was launched last Wednesday evening at Dubmire British Legion club in Fencehouses, where representatives from the national scheme - which is run by Heartstart UK and the British Heart Foundation - gave demonstrations and talks.

Heartstart UK is running 800 training schemes throughout the UK co-ordinated by the British Heart Foundation, offering free training to the public in skills needed to save lives.

Pau*Brandesfrom Heartstart said: "Our work has been given a tremendous boost, thanks to the support of the British Heart Foundation, which has provided equipment, guidance, resources and insurance.

"Now all we need is for the people of Chester-le-Street and North Durham area to come along and take part to help improve the safety of the whole community."
