EXTRA police patrols are being mounted to try to catch sneak thieves who have been preying on householders.
Handbags, purses and cash have been stolen from homes in the Thirsk area since the beginning of November.
The thieves have been taking advantage of unlocked or open doors, particularly in the town centre and Sowerby areas, usually in the late afternoons or early evenings.
The most recent case was in the Maltings, Sowerby, when a thief got in through an unlocked back door and stole a handbag and a grey purse.
As well as the extra patrols, police are appealing to the public to report anything suspicious, including any empty handbags or purses.
Anyone with any information is asked to call (01609) 783131.
