CREATIVE ideas for cheap but cheerful festive decorations were outlined at a Christmas craft fair at the weekend.

Senior library assistant Julie Howard displayed an array of easy to make Nativity novelties for a young audience in Durham.

Pomanders made from tangerines, garlands from pasta shells, plus festive doves, angels and fir cone table decorations were all displayed in Saturday's two-hour session at the Clayport Library.

"It is amazing what you can make from things around the house. It is not necessary to spend a great deal," said Julie, who also runs other seasonal theme craft workshops at the library.

Lenders and other users of the city centre library, in Millennium Place, are advised that it will close on Christmas Eve, at 4pm, until 9.30am on Friday, December 27.

Normal opening hours apply until closure at 4pm on December 31, for New Year, re-opening on Thursday January 2, at 9.30am. For details, call 0191-386 4003.
