THE hope of increasing tree cover in and around Thirsk is fast becoming a reality following two public meetings .
More than 80 people have so far shown an active interest in the community forest concept.
The Thirsk Community Woodlands Group has been established to plant trees within the 100 square miles surrounding the town. The driving force behind the group will be a twelve-strong committee, chaired by Mike I'Anson.
"It has taken 18 months to get to this point and I'm absolutely delighted. It is really rewarding," said Mr I'Anson.
"There will be some considerable background work to do in terms of establishing a constitution, health and safety policies and public liability insurance for the group - but that aside we hope the planting of trees will begin soon."
The first aim of the group will be a public launch of 'Founder Trees' - the planting of a small number of trees within some 30 parishes.
Other ideas being considered include working with the Thirsk in Bloom Group to identify a location for an avenue of trees on one of the approaches to the town.
Through a scheme known as Perimeter Planting, the group will also look to plant trees in public places such as skateparks, schools and industrial sites.
Anyone interested in becoming involved with the group should contact Mr I'Anson on (07929) 416231.
